Saturday October 8th and Sunday October 9th.
Well it's getting to be time for the Northwest Saab
Owners Club annual 509er again. This year we are going to the Maryhill
Loops Hill Climb at Maryhill, Washington. And yes they have a 509 area
code.
Some Details
Saturday October 8th:
At the Maryhill Museum of Art www.maryhillmuseum.org
, a car show from 10:00 to 4:00, show cars must be in by 11:00. Hill climb
race cars parade to Maryhill at 12:00. Open to just about anything. Awards
at 4:00, $15.00 to enter your car. BBQ buffet dinner 4:00 to 6:00 $15.00
a person, You need to preregister for the dinner.
Sunday October 9th:
the hill climb race 8:30 to 5:00 not far from the Maryhill museum.
Some Background
A little history of the race: the Hill Climb originated in 1955 and
was held each year from 1955 through 1963 on the oldest paved road in
the state. The event was discontinued after 1963 due to the deterioration
of this historic road. SOVERN (Society Of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts)
was able to revive this vintage sports car event in 1999 after the majority
of the road was restored and repaved. Open to cars 1970 and earlier. $8.00
for adults and $5.00 for kids.
Other Activities
In addition there is the Stonehenge replica, an observatory at Goldendale
with a 24.5" reflecting telescope (the largest in the USA available
for public use). There is also a secondary dome which houses an 8"
reflecting telescope. And several winery's and The Dalles Dam.
Meeting Up with the club
The Seattle area folks can meet Saturday morning in Auburn for a scenic
drive over Chinook Pass with a lunch in Yakima at Miner's http://www.minersdriveinnrestaurant.com
then on to the Maryhill Museum to catch the tail end of the car show and
the BBQ dinner. Easterners can meet up with the group in Yakima if they
wish. The plan is to leave Auburn 8:30 or 9:00 am arrive at Miner's in
Yakima around noon, and leave for Maryhill at 1:00 to arrive by 3:00.
Lodging
Motels in the Goldendale WA and Biggs OR area are starting to fill up,
but The Dalles OR about 30 mins away looks good. Dan isworking out details
on who to contact for the dinner Saturday and motel recommendations for
Saturday night. It's good if we can all stay close so we can do breakfast
together Sunday.
You are welcome to join us for both days or what ever
portion works. There is rumored to be a member entering his Sonett in
the Saturday show as well.
An article on the hill climb:

From the race coordinator
The Chamber of Commerce runs buses for the spectators up and down the
hill from the parking area at the bottom of the hill, adjacent to the
start line, to a spectator area at the middle of the hill and one at the
top of the hill just above the finish line, and return. (I recommend the
top of the hill because you can see more of the course and the race cars
assemble adjacent to that area after they cross the finish line and wait
to return down the hill in a group at the end of the heat.) The buses
run between every heat, which means about every hour. There will be a
food stand at the bottom of the hill, but you can also bring your own
lunch. I recommend you bring folding chairs since there are no bleachers:
this area is just as pristine and uncluttered as it was when the road
was built: no strip malls, no housing developments, or any of that other
suburbia; just peaceful countryside with panoramic views and great hill
climb racing.
Be sure to be at the Museum before noon on Saturday for the car show since
the race cars come rolling in enmass at noon. It is a blast, you will
not see that at any other event.
